Conservation work on Ol PejetaFrom February 2007, OPC has become the largest rhino sanctuary outside of South Africa. Covering nearly 100,000 acres on the Equator in Kenya’s Laikipia region, it has the highest ratio of game-to-area of any park or reserve in Kenya. Rare breeds on the conservancy include 80 Black rhino, 9 white rhino, the extremely rare Grevy’s zebra and Jackson’s Hartebeest, which all feed with a fluctuating population of lion, elephant, buffalo, cheetah, leopard and plains game in full view of Mount Kenya.

The Ol Pejeta Boran stud breeds the famous Boran beef cattle, of which they have approximately 6,500, along with a small herd of the remarkable Ugandan Ankole cattle, which has unusually spectacular horns (and are usually more photographed than the wildlife!)

Working closely with the local communities, OPC funds projects such as schools and clinics from fundraising initiatives such as the ‘Cricket in the Wild’ tournament, usually in September.

Laundry: Laundry is done daily, weather permitting, and ironed with a charcoal-fuelled iron.

Arrival/Departure: Transfers to/from the Nanyuki airstrip are included which is about 40 minutes drive from the main gate; guests can also charter directly into Kamok, the Ol Pejeta airstrip, weather permitting.

Insurance/Disclaimer: You will be required to sign a disclaimer on arrival, which will include your insurance details. Comprehensive travel/medical insurance which includes medical evacuation is mandatory; trip cancellation insurance is also strongly advised (volcanoes! etc). Please ensure that any special cameras etc are adequately covered; we would like to know your policy details when you arrive so that we have them on hand in case of an emergency.

Visas: Are available when you arrive in Nairobi at immigration (forms are sometimes handed out on the plane before landing), and usually cost around $50/£30, though you can get them before travelling.

Vaccinations/Malaria Prevention: Please see your doctor regarding the currently recommended vaccinations (eg hepatitis, typhoid, etc). Malaria is unusual at this altitude but may be contracted at other locations during your safari. Malarone is recommended for Kenya.
